SUZUKATHE DRIVER'S CIRCUIT
The Ultimate Test — The only figure-8 in F1, where the Esses and 130R separate the good from the great.
The History of Suzuka
Honda's masterpiece
Suzuka Circuit was built by Honda in 1962 as a test track for their motorcycles and cars. Designed by Dutch architect John Hugenholtz, it features the only figure-8 layout in Formula 1, with the track crossing over itself via an overpass.
The circuit is universally beloved by drivers. The Esses—a rapid series of S-curves taken at high speed—require absolute precision. Get the entry right, and you flow through beautifully; get it wrong, and you lose time everywhere.
130R is one of the most famous corners in motorsport. Named for its 130-meter radius, it's a flat-out left-hander taken at over 300 km/h. In the days before it was modified, it was perhaps the most intimidating corner in F1.
Suzuka has hosted some of the most dramatic championship deciders in F1 history. The Senna-Prost collisions of 1989 and 1990 remain the most controversial moments in the sport's history.
The Japanese fans are among the most knowledgeable and passionate in F1. They camp out for days, create elaborate displays, and show respect for all drivers regardless of nationality. The atmosphere at Suzuka is unique.
